A collaborative approach taken by Central Otago growers to cope with the COVID-19 crises is an excellent example for other sectors to follow, Waitaki MP Jacqui Dean says.
“The apple harvest has swung into action. I’ve been in touch with local growers and am impressed by their resilience. Setting up an informal support group before the start of the lockdown period was a good move that will bring many benefits in the weeks and months to come.

“By working together to share knowledge and ideas, they stand a far better chance of weathering this storm and coming out the other side in a strong position.

“The horticulture industry in general has shown its true value in recent weeks by continuing to fill the nation’s food bowl, export produce overseas and provide much needed employment opportunities for those who need it.

“Industry groups like New Zealand Apples and Pears have done a lot of work to come up with guidance for producers during harvest to help them continue with their work within existing limitations. This can-do attitude is just what the economy needs.”
