RANZCOG calls for a National Register on implantable devices

A wide range of implantable devices (active medical devices that are intended to be introduced into the human body such as joints, stents, and others) are used in medicine. As advances in technology and medical science lead to improved outcomes for patients, it is increasingly important that information is captured and that longitudinal data is evaluated to ensure that treatments and interventions are safe and effective.
 
RANZCOG supports the call for a unified, appropriately funded and independently run national register of implants. A standardised clinical framework for describing adverse outcomes is critical to ensure consistency and improve reporting.

    Again, there appears to be no way of determining which Australian women have had Essure devices placed," said RANZCOG President Professor Steve Robson. "The same issues made follow-up with transvaginal mesh so difficult. This is now unacceptable, and action should be taken immediately."

During the Transvaginal Mesh Senate Inquiry, many submitters (including the Australian College of Midwives) expressed support for such a register; noting that the ability to collect and analyse data is central to an effective and efficient health care system.
