Good book: Frank Herbert’s sci-fi book Dune has been adapted for the screen twice – in 1984 and 2021. The latter version is split into two movies, with the second part due for release next March. It’s an epic watch and read – so now is a great time to read or revisit the source material.

Good programme: You can’t go wrong with an engaging film-length murder mystery – the series Brokenwood Mysteries (TVNZ+) is New Zealand’s answer to the UK’s Midsomer Murders (Acorn) and includes similar elements of scenery, quirky characters and touches of humour, along with the solving of the case.

Good board game: There might be a plethora of new board games available, but the original Scrabble still holds its own.

Good swimming spot: Tindalls Bay in Whangaparāoa is one of many lovely beaches in north Auckland. For a larger sweep of sand, head to Orewa, which also has cafés nearby.

Good feed: For daytime eating, the garden café at King’s Plant Barn in Silverdale, north Auckland, has a range of cabinet and menu items, indoor and outdoor (covered) seating and a relaxed atmosphere.
