The National Hauora Coalition (NHC) has confirmed today that 23 General Practices are set to join its Primary Health Organisation.

This will increase the NHC’s enrolled population from 93,907 to 226,134 enrolled patients. This includes an increase of Māori enrolled patients from 18,508 to 42,834.

The NHC’s member General Practices currently number 30 spread across Auckland, Counties- Manukau, Waikato and Whanganui District Health Boards (DHBs).

The increase in General Practices formally recognises an additional relationship with Waitemata DHB and increases the NHC’s network of primary care providers to 53.

“The addition of 17 General Practices in the Waikato region provides an exciting opportunity for the National Hauora Coalition to further its programmes of activity and influence to leverage greater health outcomes for the whānau and communities” says Simon Royal, the NHC’s Chief Executive.

“It also recognises the NHC’s deep commitment to working with the primary healthcare sector to strengthen the provision of primary healthcare services and we look forward to working closely with our Waikato network of General Practices”.

The further addition of six General Practices located in Waitemata DHB amends the informal arrangements that the NHC has currently with Comprehensive Care PHO to umbrella its six General Practices due to Waitemata DHB’s two PHO policy prohibiting the NHC from operating as a PHO in the district.

The Waitemata DHB Board last month rescinded this policy allowing the NHC to operate as a PHO in its district from October this year.

The NHC’s Chief Operating Officer, Tereki Stewart, says “It is good to see common sense has prevailed in Waitemata DHB amending its PHO policy to allow the NHC to operate as a PHO in its district when we were effectively doing so anyway”.

“It also means the NHC will secure the appropriate funding it should have been receiving to deliver services rather than funding being directed to administration costs to service umbrella arrangements”.

The changes to the National Hauora Coalition’s PHO network membership are due to take effect from 1st October 2019.
