At this month’s meeting the Board approved the proposal to seek approval from the Ministry of Health and Capital Investment Committee to complete the construction of a primary care facility on site at Bay of Islands Hospital, including an outpatient suite if possible.

Northland DHB was notified on 20 July, 2017 by the Ngāti Hine Health Trust Board that they had decided not to proceed with construction of Te Hauora O Pukepuke Rau, an integrated wellness centre.

“Ngāti Hine Health Trust’s decision not to proceed with the construction of Te Hauora O Pukepuke Rau was based on unaffordable architectural design in the current environment,” offered chief executive Dr Nick Chamberlain.

“Their project has faced unprecedented increases in building costs which are being experienced across Northland and New Zealand.”

Plans are underway to discuss the process of obtaining Capital Investment Committee consent and Northland DHB continues to work with Ngāti Hine Health Trust on options for the site.

“We are committed to working with Ngāti Hine Health Trust to ensure that we create a whānau centered and co-located facility that aligns with the Neighbourhood Healthcare Home model of care.”
