District Health Boards are optimistic the Independent Panel proposed by the Prime Minister will recommend a pathway to settle pay talks with NZNO nurses, healthcare assistants and midwives.

DHB spokesperson Helen Mason says the Panel will be examining ideas and working through options to try and address the pay and workload issues raised.

“The frustration of NZNO members has been made very clear over the last two weeks of rallies and we understand the purpose of the ballot about possible industrial action. DHBs are strongly committed to exploring all options for a settlement.

“The Panel will hear submissions from both the NZNO and DHBs next week, and aims to have a final recommendation in four weeks. DHBs will then make an updated offer.

“DHBs acknowledge the issues raised are important to nurses and midwives and we want to give them confidence that we can address them.

“DHBs are focused on delivering more and better care to our communities. An important element of that is growing and supporting our workforce to meet the demands of our expanding population with increasingly complex conditions and chronic illnesses.

“Nursing staff are critical to that and we are committed to finding a solution that recognises and starts to address their concerns,” says Helen Mason.
