Stepping up to governance of kaupapa Māori PHO

Denise Kingi and Heemi Kapa-Kingi have joined the board at the PHO Te Kōhao Health, which serves more than 30,000 whānau in HaurakiWaikato and Maniapoto. Ms Kingi is a retired nurse and worked for Te Kōhau from its start in 1994 until her last day, as general manager, in February. Mr Kapa-Kingi’s background is in research in te reo Māori and psychology.

A former primary care leader has flown the public sector coop to become a partner with consultancy PwC. Keriana Brooking led Gisborne’s Turanganui PHO and held senior posts in Pinnacle Midlands Health Network and the Ministry of Health, then led Hawke's Bay DHBIn May, she began six months at Te Whatu Ora as interim national director commissioning. Nikki Canter-Burgoyne has also joined PwC, as an associate director. Ms Canter-Burgoyne worked on localities with Te Aka Whai Ora after primary care oversight roles at the ministry

Te Whatu Ora appoints former DHB boss Fionnagh Dougan

Fionnagh Dougan has been appointed national director, hospital & specialist services at Te Whatu Ora.

Ms Dougan was health and specialist services chief executive of Queensland’s Children’s Hospital and its state-wide health service between 2015 and 2019 and, for the next three years, was chief executive of the Capital & Coast and Hutt Valley DHBs.

She previously led provider services at the former Auckland DHB.

Influential role in Māori authority

Juanita Te Kani (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga) started this month in the role of deputy chief executive – strategy, policy, and monitoring at Te Aka Whai Ora.

Ms Te Kani’s previous role was leading youth development at the Ministry of Social Development, and she has had more than 20 years in the public service, Ms Te Kani set up the policy and governance teams at Te Aka Whai Ora while on a secondment.

Health infrastructure buck stops here

The chief infrastructure and investment officer at Te Whatu Ora will be Jeremy Holman, who from December will head planning and delivery of 100-plus projects worth almost $6.7 billion.

The general manager, infrastructure delivery at Crown Infrastructure Partners, Mr Holman has held senior roles with Downer Group, Auckland Council and Air New Zealand and started his career as a Royal Engineer officer in the British Army.

Advising on the nitty gritty of contracts

Michael Howard has joined Te Whatu Ora as principal advisor, national contracts, a role that supports contracts across primary care, pharmacy and rural health. Mr Howard worked in primary care integration with central shared services agency TAS for more than five years, after key roles with General Practice NZ and the then primary care health IT organisation Patients First. He has also worked for the then-named WIPA and Compass Health, and the Ministry of Health.

Medicus appoints GP board members

Specialist GP and barrister Roderick Mulgan has joined the board at professional indemnity provider Medicus. Dr Mulgan is founder of Auckland multi-doctor practice Caliburn Medical Services, which supports aged-care facilities. He also does part-time criminal and medicolegal work in Wellington. Specialist GP Vanessa Weenink, of Christchurch, is the other new board member. Dr Weenink, former NZMA deputy chair and GP Council chair, served in the regular and territorial Army Medical Services between 1998 and 2019.
