A first-ever crossover session of space radiology recognises the critical role of radiology in space science and presents the world’s first demonstration of astronauts’ brain MRIs.

In-depth expert review of Australia’s first application of the latest revolutionary photon-counting CT scans in South Australia.

Sessions addressing current controversies and future developments in proton therapy for cancers in anticipation of the Australian Bragg Centre, the first proton therapy facility in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) is excited to reveal the program highlights of its 72nd Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) to be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 27–30 October 2022.

All-star keynote speakers from home and abroad will gather at our largest radiology conference to date, to present an innovative scientific program of more than 250 presentations across 70-plus sessions and workshops, with various social events on offer for attendees to reflect, revive, and re-imagine at the four-day conference.

Clin A/Prof Sanjay Jeganathan, RANZCR President, said: “I’m looking forward to welcoming the clinical radiology and radiation oncology community as well as all healthcare professionals to our ASM in Adelaide. It will certainly inspire everyone because it is a showcase of the latest medical technology advancements, leading multi-disciplinary collaborations for innovations, exciting milestones in cancer treatment, and the critical role of radiology in pushing human limits and boundaries in space science.”

A/Prof Christen Barras, clinical radiology co-convenor, said: “It has been a great pleasure to assemble the clinical part of the program this year, enlisting industry luminaries across disciplines to present exciting radiology research and studies, including a novelty session on radiology, space science and medicine.”

Dr Ramkumar Govindaraj and Dr Laurence Kim, radiation oncology co-convenors, said: “It is a privilege to create the radiation oncology section of the program. We’re both proud to have leading international radiation oncologists join us to share their experience and address the challenges in cancer treatment.”

Dr Richard Harris SOC OAM, 2019 Australian of the Year, will join RANZCR dignitaries to officially open the conference as the 2022 Nisbet Orator at the plenary session, sharing his story as a doctor and expert cave diver in the Thai cave rescue operation that captured the world’s attention and imagination.

RANZCR will proudly present the Space Radiology Session, the first of its kind that crosses over radiology and space science. It brings together prominent figures in both disciplines to explore the critical role of clinical radiology, medical imaging, and aerospace medicine in a multi-planetary future for humankind, with world-first research findings to be demonstrated.

At National Imaging Facility (NIF) Showcase, RANZCR and NIF will explore opportunities to collaborate on cutting-edge research and innovate at a strategic level to

keep Australians healthy. NIF provides open access to flagship imaging equipment, expertise, tools, data and analysis to advance innovation. It is a unique opportunity to understand what NIF offers.

CT Advances Session will feature Dr Andrew Dwyer with his in-depth expert review of Australia’s first application of the latest revolutionary photon-counting CT scans in South Australia.

Proton Therapy Session will address current controversies and further developments in proton therapy, model-based approaches for patient selection, and proton therapy in head and neck cancers.

Particle Therapy Session will present exciting updates about national progress towards treating the first patients with proton beam therapy at the Australian Bragg Centre in Adelaide in 2025 while the $500-million state-of-the-art cancer centre is under construction in the heart of the Adelaide BioMed City.

International and local experts will reflect on COVID, sharing their research findings and learnings, including Prof Tarek Yousry (UK) at Neuroradiology Sessions and Prof Sujal Desai (UK) at Chest Sessions.

RANZCR continues delivering on its commitment to educating and supporting the radiology and radiation oncology professions through a dedicated Trainee Day at the conference, offering a wide range of diverse program for trainees from both clinical radiology and radiation oncology to learn, compete and network. Branch of Origin is a key part of the Trainee Day where clinical radiology trainees representing their branch in each state and New Zealand will battle for the best presentation prize and a ticket to the Radiological Society of North America scientific meeting 2023 in Chicago, USA. Concurrently, the annual Varian Prize Session will see radiation oncology trainees compete for the best scientific paper.

For the very first time, RANZCR will welcome five Indigenous medical students and junior doctors to travel to Adelaide for the ASM to explore the world of radiology in person. Since the launch of the inaugural ASM Sponsor Grant Program in 2021, the grant has supported Māori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students and practitioners to extend their knowledge about clinical radiology and radiation oncology. It is a key action of RANZCR’s ongoing commitment to equitable health outcomes for Māori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
