About the Film

The Girl On The Bridge, is a new kiwi documentary that premiered to a sell-out crowd at the New Zealand International Film Festival in Auckland last month.

The film tells the story of mental health activist Jazz Thornton – her journey to overcome a suicidal past, to help others with their struggles and the personal cost of her advocacy. It is a glimpse into a world few of us comprehend and a response to our collective anguish about the suicide crisis in our communities and our desire to “do something”.

“The courage and honesty shown by Jazz is tremendously inspiring.”

Dévora Kestel, Director, Mental Health and Substance Use, World Health Organization

The goal of the film and its accompanying social impact campaign is to increase society's understanding and support of those who are struggling and are suicidal.

Host your own workplace screening

Alongside our general release of the film, we are making it available to workplaces and community groups around the country to screen as part of Mental Health Awareness Week (September 21-27) and beyond.

A workplace screening of the film can form part of a corporate wellbeing programme or be utilised as a standalone event for management and/or staff.

It is a good way to kick-off constructive discussions about the role that each and every one of us can play in our community response to the suicide crisis. To assist with these events, our team has compiled clinician-endorsed resource kits to help screening hosts plan their event and also conduct safe and supportive post-screening discussions.

Talking About Suicide

Sharing stories is a powerful way for people to connect, particularly around difficult subject matter.

Hosting a screening of The Girl On The Bridge enables communities, organisations, workplace groups, educators, clubs and whanau to come together to safely and constructively discuss the ways that each and every one of us can join together in the fight against suicide.

It is OK to talk about suicide and by choosing to host a screening of The Girl On The Bridge you are helping to remove the stigma and to break the silence that surrounds the suicide crisis. Organisations such as New Zealand’s Suicide Prevention Office and the World Health Organisation advocate for more community discussion around this vital issue.
