E Tu: day 19 of hunger strike at Parliament for meaningful climate action

David Goldsmith, father of three and environmental activist, is on day 19 of a full hunger strike at Parliament. There will be an event from 12:00-1:30pm with Fridays for Future climate strike activists and other supporters.

On day 21 - Sunday, August 1st, 2020 - David will end his hunger strike and 66 year old retired doctor Robin Treadwell will continue going forward. There will be an event from 12:00-2:00pm on Sunday in front of Parliament as the baton is passed.

Members of the public are invited to stand in solidarity at Parliament along with David and Fridays for Future on Friday, July 30th at 12:00pm - 1:30pm, and August 1st from 12:00pm - 2:00pm to show support.

The protest demands that government leaders build a green economy that will not only help those who are disenfranchised by the covid crisis, but will also contribute to the health and well-being of all via rapid transition to a sustainable future that is both fair and kind. It is a call to action and a message of hope to everyone who is struggling right now or worried about the future.

“The ecological emergency is not only climate change (global heating). It is global heating and ocean acidification and mass extinction… 9 of the 15 known tipping points in the Earth's climate system are already activated. Tipping points have the potential to cascade, like a line of dominoes, one tipping point activating the next. The consequence of tipping points cascading is abrupt and irreversible climate catastrophe… The urgency of our situation cannot be understated. The primary driver of all this is burning fossil fuel, therefore the primary solution is banning fossil fuel extraction and import globally.” - David Goldsmith

Activists are prepared to continue the strike for the entire run up to the election as a call for real leadership and meaningful climate action from government leaders in Aoteoroa.

We recognize that Te Ātiawa/Taranaki ki Te Upoko o Te Ika has mana whenua over the location in which this action takes place, and participants hope to honour them with a sincere commitment to keeping the world safe and healthy for generations to come.
