Change in death reporting and reconciliation of deaths tally. Ministry of Health today announced a new way of reporting COVID-related deaths within 28 days of postive COVID test, in three categories: (a) COVID is clearly the cause of death, 34 deaths so far, (b) died with but not of COVID, 2 deaths so far, (c) cause of death still under investigation, 48 so far. Total of COVID-related deaths so far is higher still, at 91, than the sum of those three categories because of the addition of several deaths from the past fortnight most of which were in aged residential care and, although certified, they hadn't been notified through the public health system. The first known case of Omicron BA.4 variant has arrived in New Zealand, the Ministry of Health says. The person arrived from South Africa on 22 April and returned positive test results (RAT on 23 April and PCR on 24 April). The ministry says there is no evidence yet that BA.4 is more transmissible than other Omicron lineages, or causes more severe disease. Two other Omicron sub-variants, BA.2.12.1 and BA 2.12.2 were detected in arriving travellers for the first time on 11 and 15 April. Neither is a sub-variant of concern.

Ministry of Health changes reinfection advice. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms at 29 or more days after initial infection should test, and isolate for seven days if positive. The previous advice was people did not need to re-test if they had tested positive within the past 90 days. Household contacts who have had COVID within 90 days will not need to isolate unless symptomatic.

The first two community detections of Omicron BA.2.75 were reported today from Auckland by the Ministry of Health. Both cases are linked to known imported cases. BA.2.75 is a recently identified second generation subvariant of BA.2, the dominant variant currently circulating in New Zealand. This subvariant, similar to Omicron BA.4 and BA.5, may have an enhanced ability to evade immunity. There is no current evidence it leads to more severe disease.
Change in reporting COVID-19 deaths: From today, the Ministry of Health is shifting from reporting all deaths of people who died within 28 days of COVID infection, to reporting those who died because of COVID or where it was recorded as a contributing factor. The WHO asked New Zealand to make the change. It is expected two-thirds to three-quarters of previously reported "COVID-related deaths" will be recategorised as deaths caused by COVID or having been contributed to by COVID.

Hospital admissions have increased, while occupancy rates have started to stabilise. Mortality counts have increased slightly. BA.5 was the dominant subvariant accounting for an estimated 66 per cent of cases, with the proportion of BA.5 declining slowly over the previous weeks. Detections of BA.2.75, XBB and BQ.1.1 are trending upward, both in whole genome sequencing and wastewater. Over the next few weeks, it is possible that cases, hospitalisations and mortality could increase to a new peak in a third Omicron wave.

But wastewater detections, hospital admissions and mortality have started to stabilise. BA.5 was the dominant subvariant, continuing to account for an estimated 66 per cent of cases. Detections of BA.2.75, XBB and BQ.1.1 are trending upward. XBB and BA.2.75 variants are over-represented in reinfections. Over coming weeks, it is possible cases, hospitalisations and mortality could increase, but the size, timing, and duration of the peak and new baseline trends of cases, hospitalisations and mortality is uncertain.
