Expediting the Treaty Principles Bill through Parliament to circumvent the national hīkoi is a dishonourable act, says NZ Association of Counsellors (NZAC) President Sarah Maindonald.

“As counsellors, we are deeply committed to fostering a fair and inclusive society that honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi as an integral part of New Zealand’s identity,” says Maindonald.

“The Government’s rushed approach effectively silences meaningful dialogue on legislation that impacts the very foundation of our nation’s ethical and legal framework.”
Maindonald emphasises that Te Tiriti o Waitangi has guided New Zealand toward equitable and culturally respectful governance for over a century.

Any changes to Tiriti principles demand comprehensive consultation and respect for both its spirit and history.

“By fast-tracking this legislation, the Government is bypassing essential democratic processes that protect the rights and interests of all New Zealanders, particularly those whose cultural and historical rights are directly affected,” Maindonald states.

NZAC’s stance reflects its constitutional commitment to promoting ethical standards that honour its responsibilities under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, including contributing to the healing of the injustices from colonisation.

The Association calls on the Government to reconsider its approach.

“We urge our members and the wider public to stay informed about the Treaty Principles Bill and its potential impacts,” says Maindonald.

“The voices of all New Zealanders must be heard on matters this fundamental to our national identity.”
