The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) welcomes increased investment in radiation oncology equipment in New Zealand.

Today Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, and Minister for Health, Dr David Clark, announced plans to replace 12 linear accelerators (linacs), machines used to deliver radiation as part of the treatment of cancer, across New Zealand over the next three years. The Government also announced the reallocation of two linacs from Palmerston North to Hawkes Bay and Taranaki.

Chair of RANZCR’s New Zealand Radiation Oncology Executive Committee, Dr Carol Johnson said:

“Today’s announcement is welcome recognition of the vital role radiation therapy plays in cancer care. Currently half of all cancer patients could benefit from radiation therapy, yet in New Zealand only one in three have it.

“It is expected that around 22,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer this year. This number is likely to continue increasing with the ageing population.

“We know that Māori and Pacific peoples and those living in rural areas experience poorer health outcomes and access to vital health services.

“This investment to upgrade radiation oncology equipment means that cancer patients will have access to the latest technology delivering targeted, safe and cost-effective modern cancer treatment.”

“The life span of a linac is typically 10 years; however, over one-quarter of all linacs in New Zealand are more than 10 years old. A further one-third will be due for replacement over the next three years.”

Given the likely increase in the number of people diagnosed with cancer, it will be important to ensure that there is adequate equipment and facilities to deliver quality care.

RANZCR looks forward to the government outlining what further action it will take in the interim cancer action plan and we hope to see continued investment into radiation oncology equipment, facilities and workforce to meet the increased demand.

RANZCR will continue our work with the Government to ensure all New Zealand cancer patients have access to the treatment they need.
