A new-look, re-vamped BreastFedNZ app is now available to support all parents/whānau through pregnancy to weaning and everything in between.

The team at BreastFedNZ has spent the past 12 months rebuilding and redesigning the mobile app. It puts the latest, evidence-based information and experience right at parents' fingertips.

The revised app is modern, attractive and comprehensive.

Parents can browse 20 categories, find the information they need using a clever search function, and easily bookmark their favourite content to access later.

BreastFedNZ app lead, Karen Palmer says there are 55,000 births in New Zealand each year and every parent will be encouraged to download the app.

She says it replaces booklets, handouts and pamphlets.

"Today's birthing women are digital. If it isn't on a phone it doesn't exist. The whole concept is to provide information in the hand when it's wanted, where it's wanted and as it's wanted."

Earlier versions of the app were released in 2015 and 2018 and have become trusted resources for parents.

Karen says the app has been designed specifically for New Zealand whānau - blending information supported by science with meaningful, personal stories. “It will also be of value to our Australian and Pacific Island cousins,” she says.

"It's our hope that everyone will be able to recognise themselves and will feel supported."

The app covers subjects ranging from premature babies, twins, rainbow babies, special conditions, common breastfeeding concerns, returning to work and where to turn for extra help. It features links to resources in other languages.

The BreastFedNZ app is also a learning package for midwives, lactation consultants and other health professionals who can access a wide range of sharable resources to help parents on their breastfeeding journey.

It has been developed with the support of Te Whatu Ora (Waikato and Lakes), and endorsed by Nga Maia, Māori Midwives ō Aotearoa.

BreastFedNZ app is available on iOS and Android, with further resources accessed via the website.
