Hawkins to build North Shore’s new hospital building

Hawkins has been appointed by Waitematā DHB as the construction contractor for Tōtara Haumaru, the new state-of-the-art hospital facility at North Shore Hospital. On track for completion in 2023, the new hospital is the DHB’s biggest expansion project since the construction of the main tower block in the early 1980s.

Dr Dale Bramley, Waitematā District Health Board Chief Executive, said this new facility would enable the DHB to better meet the future needs of the Waitematā district and the appointment of Hawkins was an exciting step for this project.

“When this facility opens in a couple of years, we will see a much needed increase to inpatient capacity to help keep pace with the growing demands of the rapidly growing community it serves.”

“There are only a small number of companies in New Zealand able to take on a project of this scale. Hawkins has extensive experience in the health sector and understands the intricate and technical nature of this project.”

Tōtara Haumaru will be a welcome extension to the existing services currently available at North Shore Hospital and will ensure the best possible care is available to those who live in the Waitematā district, which is the largest in the country with more than 630,000 people. This figure is expected to grow to over 800,000 people by 2036/37.

The new multi-storey facility will be connected to the main hospital building via Sky Bridge and will include:

• up to 150 additional beds;
• eight state-of-the-art operating theatres;
• new endoscopy suites for colonoscopy and gastroscopy procedures;
• whānau and patient-centred design, supporting modern models of care, to enhance the experience for visitors and patients.

Hawkins’ General Manager for Auckland, Craig Treloar, said Tōtara Haumaru will be a top-class facility and the Hawkins team is proud to have been selected to be part of this project.

“We know from our experience on previous hospital projects how rewarding it is to build healthcare facilities that make a difference to the community. We’re really looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Developed design is well underway and the demolition and site clearance will be completed within four months. Hawkins will be on-site to begin in January and foundations are expected to be laid towards the end of next year.

Waitematā DHB is currently undergoing close to $500 million in upgrades to future-proof services and facilities and to enhance patient and whānau experiences, as part of the Waitematā 2025 programme. Projects include:

• major expansion of redeveloped Mason Clinic site at Pt Chevalier
• new Clinical Sterile Services Department (CSSD) at North Shore Hospital
• major redevelopment of SCBU at Waitakere Hospital
• infrastructure upgrade across all major facility sites
• new diagnostic breast service at North Shore Hospital
