Free data initiative removes barriers to agency information and services

No data? No problem.

Te Whatu Ora and Te Aka Whai Ora welcome Zero Data, a service available to anyone who has no data, or is running low, on their mobile phone or device.

Through Zero Data, New Zealanders can now access websites for health, social services, education, housing and more for free from their smart phone.

“Most New Zealanders have a mobile phone. But many do not always have access to the internet,” Te Whatu Ora Chief Data and Digital Officer Leigh Donoghue says.

“Now, all you need to do is turn on your data and visit zero.govt.nz – and it’s free.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of Zero Data, as it removes a significant barrier for many Kiwis to access information or services online where and when they need them.”

Mr Donoghue says while this is not the first or only sponsored data initiative in New Zealand, it is a significant step to bridge the digital divide and ensure equal access to essential online services.

Zero Data is a cross-agency solution with support from ACC, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Te Whatu Ora, Te Aka Whai Ora, Kāinga Ora, Department of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Social Development, and the Ministry of Justice. The websites of these agencies can also be accessed through Zero Data.

It is available to anyone using Spark, Skinny, One New Zealand, 2degrees, Warehouse Mobile, Slingshot or Orcon mobile networks.
