Chief Coroner Deborah Marshall has announced Christchurch-based Coroner Anna Tutton as the new Deputy Chief Coroner.

Coroner Tutton replaces former Deputy Chief Coroner Brandt Shortland who was appointed a judge of the District Court earlier this year.

“I’m pleased to announce Coroner Tutton in the deputy role,” Chief Coroner Deborah Marshall says. “Over the past five years, she has portrayed exemplary leadership skills and been a reliable support to me and other coroners in numerous ways.

“Coroner Tutton’s leadership and decisiveness was particularly helpful following the March 2015 shooting and the Whakaari White Island eruption when the Mass Fatality Incident plan was announced. Coroner Tutton acted as liaison between Coroners and NZ Police and ensured processes established for the identification of victims ran as smoothly as possible.”

Coroner Tutton has Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts degrees from Canterbury University, and prior to her appointment to the Coroners Court in 2015 worked, among other things, in legal and leadership roles for NZ Police, the Commerce Commission and the Institute of Professional Legal Studies.

Coroner Tutton also has extensive voluntary experience in Pacific jurisdictions, helping establish coronial processes in Niue and Nauru and training judicial officers in Kiribati.

“As an experienced coroner, and having held leadership roles previously, I am pleased to have this opportunity to make a greater contribution to the effective and efficient operation of the coronial system,” Coroner Tutton says.

“I look forward to applying my skills and experience to working with Judge Marshall, the Chief Coroner, and all coroners to ensure we can fulfil our roles for the benefit of bereaved families and for society in general by doing what we can to prevent future deaths.”

Coroner Tutton will be sworn in on 13 October in Christchurch.
