Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) begins next Monday 23 September. This year’s theme is 'Community is… what we create together', focusing on the power of community in uplifting our collective wellbeing. After speaking to over 1,500 people impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle and other recent extreme weather events, a clear theme was revealed – community is the key to getting through tough times. This MHAW, we’re encouraging New Zealanders to define, build and celebrate community. Across the motu, thousands of individuals, organisations, schools and community groups will come together to engage in activities to boost wellbeing. Spread the word about MHAW on social media using #MHAWNZ and show others how you and your community are taking part this year.

Shaun Robinson, chief executive of the Mental Health Foundation (MHF), says, “the past couple of years have posed significant challenges for Aotearoa, including weather events, financial stress, and political divides. These difficulties have sometimes made us feel disconnected from the people and places that matter most. MHAW presents a vital opportunity for New Zealanders to prioritise their mental health and rediscover the importance of connection to your community – whatever it may look like to you."

“Whether it’s starting the week off with an act of kindness on Manaaki Monday, connecting with family and friends on Whānau Wednesday, or spreading good vibes by showing gratitude on Whakawhetai Friday, we invite you to join us in celebrating community throughout the week. Each community is unique, and we encourage you to connect with one another to create something meaningful together.”

To help your workplace, school or community group participate in MHAW, jump online and access free resources. The MHAW Guide, inspired by our recent community wellbeing research, Te Whare Tapa Whā and the Five Ways to Wellbeing, provides activity ideas for each day of the week, and the How to have a safe and support kōrero resource offers advice on having a conversation with someone who is going through a tough time. Get your colleagues involved with our MHAW themed quiz, connect with someone far away using our postcard, or check out the wallet card resource that contains information about this year’s theme and daily activities.

“One in five New Zealanders experience a mental illness and/or addiction each year and it’s essential to remember that with the right tautoko (support), many people can and do recover. MHAW is an occasion to tune into your mental health and wellbeing, engage with your community, and connect with the people who uplift you. Strong social connections are essential for our life satisfaction and overall health, which is why being part of a community can provide us with a sense of belonging, purpose and connectedness,” Robinson adds.

Participating in MHAW for the first time as Minister for Mental Health, Matt Doocey encourages those who might need some extra support to reach out this MHAW. Minister Doocey says “after a car accident in my teens, I had my own battle with mental health, so I can relate to the feeling of being self-conscious and hesitant to get help. That’s why this year’s theme resonates with me – having a strong community around you can make a real difference in identifying someone who’s struggling and encouraging them to reach out.”

There’s no health without mental health. By donating to the Mental Health Foundation this MHAW, you can help us create an Aotearoa where everyone enjoys positive mental health and wellbeing. Your donation will help us continue our important mahi, including distributing and promoting resources, and advocating for a better mental health system.
