Top-quality patient care, business growth and wellbeing of staff focus for incoming CEO

Auckland Eye is delighted to announce that Gordon Armstrong has been appointed the new CEO of the company. With extensive leadership experience in the healthcare sector, Gordon assumed his responsibilities in early March 2022.

Untapped potential for future growth and relationships

Gordon joins Auckland Eye from the Care Group where he has been the CEO for the past 14 years. For well over a decade, he has worked as a CEO in the health sector in primary care (urgent care and general practice), specialist centres, medical property and investments.

He has also served on several regional leadership teams including the primary care COVID-19 response for Auckland Metro, the Regional After-Hours Network, GP & Urgent Care COVID Working Group and as part of expert advisory groups for ACC funding contracts.

“Gordon has a soundtrack record of working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders across the health sector, helping businesses grow successfully while keeping patient needs and the wellbeing of staff front and centre,” says Mark Conelly, Chair of the Auckland Eye Board.

“These will be important attributes for leading Auckland Eye as we enter our next phase of delivering on our mission – to provide life-changing eye care to New Zealanders."

World-renowned team of innovators

In his previous role at Care Group, Gordon led a prolonged period of significant growth and diversification with robust financial returns.

He says that success is driven by the people that make up an organisation, and ensuring they are well trained, well supported and empowered to do their very best is essential.

“Auckland Eye is already a successful, well-known organisation, and there’s still enormous capacity for growth,” Gordon adds.

“We’ve got this wonderful network of clinics and theatres, with some of the best surgeons and specialists in the world, and what will be most exciting is being able to expand our reach and provide innovative new services to more people and communities.”

Leading provider of the best patient care

Dr Sarah Welch (MBChB, BMedSci, FRANZCO), a Board member and shareholder of Auckland Eye, believes Gordon’s mix of sector experience and expert relationship management is exactly what’s needed to guide the company into its next chapter.

“His key focus has always been the patient and providing the best experience possible. To do that, you need happy staff and Gordon has a great rapport with the doctors and staff at Auckland Eye. That puts him in good stead for success at Auckland Eye.”

“We want to be known as the largest provider of premium eye care in Aotearoa, New Zealand. We’re pretty close to that right now so it’s about continuing to be that trusted provider of life-changing eye care. We’re changing people’s lives for the better, and I think that’s impressive,” Gordon says.
