Welcome to Summer Hiatus and our curated collection of stories that we think you might like to take a second look at. The coronavirus continues to shadow our days but we hope, as you find some time for relaxation and maybe some reflection, Summer Hiatus will help

Summer Hiatus, it’s an eclectic selection of News and Educate articles from our archives and other sources. All Summer Hiatus articles are FREE READ – that is, in front of the paywall – or as I like to think of it, Free and Easy – Free to Read and Easy to Share.

While we are out of the office our Comment function will be turned off. So, save up your thoughts for our return in the New Year. Can you believe it, 2023!

From our team to yours – Merry Christmas

We wish all our subscribers a very Merry Christmas, a safe summer break should you be taking one and, most of all, the quietest of times should you find yourself working over the holiday season.

It has been a challenging year as we have all battled to find our new normal when normal continually morphs just as we think we have it all sussed.

The year 2023 will bring new challenges and we will continue to support primary care through whatever comes at it. We’ll be back in the office and online on 16 January 2023. Watch out for the first Daily Triage on Tuesday 17 January.

Thanks for reading us. We really, truly, appreciate your support.

Warm regards, Ngā mihi nui

Barbara, Ruth, Virginia, Martin, Fiona, Alan, Maia and Natasha

But wait, there’s more

Policy puzzler and Auckland University associate professor Tim Tenbensel has followed the ebbs and flows, highways and byways of health reform policy for a couple of decades; find his collected columns here

And specialist GP and gifted writer Lucy O’Hagan shares her insights into life and death and all avenues between in her regular column Just wondering

In case you missed it

You can check out issues of years gone by in the Long-Term Print Archives, provided by the folks at The Knowledge Basket. You’ll find them in the Vault.

All 21 episodes of our podcast, System Fix - the podcast for health reform junkies which looks at progress with the current health reforms are collected here

And then there's the virus

COVID-19 has been hovering throughout the year and will continue to shadow us over the summer. If you’re wondering how it all started take a journey down this incredible Coronavirus timeline maintained throughout the last three years by Martin Johnston

And dip into He Ako Hiringa the education programme aimed at achieving equity in access to medicines. It is produced by Matui – a joint venture involving New Zealand Doctor’s publisher, The Health Media.

The EPiC dashboard produced by He Ako Hiringa allows prescribers to interrogate their prescribing data and compare it with practice and national data. As a New Zealand Doctor prescriber you can log on directly

For short fixes of clinical knowledge, check out PEARLS and Gems. These little nuggets are quick and easy clinical updates and are intended as practice-changing or practice-maintaining.

Comments close

As mentioned earlier, from today the Comments function on the website will be turned off until Monday 16 January. But if you have to get something off your chest don’t hesitate to write a letter to the editor – editor@nzdoctor.co.nz – I’ll take a look when I get back.
