Positive Medicine author’s BMA win

Cromwell-based occupational medicine specialist and former GP David Beaumont has won the primary care category in this year’s BMA medical book awards for Positive Medicine: Disrupting the Future of Medical Practice (Oxford University Press). Judges say the book is “a refreshing insight into modern medical thinking”. UK-trained Dr Beaumont moved to New Zealand in 2006 and founded consultancy Fit For Work, which he grew to a team of 100 as a director until 2018. He is a former president of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Change at the top of negotiations forum

With Neil Stiles’ departure after 15 years as chair of primary care contract negotiators the PHO Services Agreement Amendment Protocol (PSAAP) group, Shenagh Gleisner is the new chair. Ms Gleisner, a Health Quality & Safety Commission board member, was a general manager at the Northern Regional Health Authority in the 1990s. She went on to become a director of consultancy KPMG and to hold numerous senior roles, including with the State Services Commission and the then Department of Labour. She was Ministry of Women’s Affairs chief executive from 2004 to 2010. Ms Gleisner is a director of Emerge Aotearoa and industry training group The Skills Organisation.

WellSouth executive not dropping his IT role

Damon Campbell has started as WellSouth Primary Health Network’s chief operating officer while still holding the role of chief digital officer. Mr Campbell’s responsibilities include the practice network team and Health Care Homes programme, as well as a new virtual team of Pou Tokeke project coordinators who will support equity and clinic improvement programmes. The primary and community care representative on the Government’s Capability Uplift Governance Group, he joined WellSouth in June last year after a long career in digital leadership in local government.

Successor to high-profile nursing leader appointed

Kate Weston has stepped into the shoes of the high-profile former executive director of the College of Nurses Aotearoa, Jenny Carryer (see page 25 ). Most recently, Ms Weston was association nursing and professional services manager at the New Zealand Nurses Organisation, where she was a professional nursing advisor for nearly 12 years. A former quality manager, child women and family service, for the former Waitematā DHB Service, she earlier was the DHB’s practice leader, child disability service and is a registered nurse with a Master of Nursing degree.

Regulator WorkSafe New Zealand has a new board chair – Jennifer Kerr, a professional director with extensive health and safety knowledge and experience. Ms Kerr is a former group director, HR for Fonterra. She chairs New Zealand Trade and Enterprise and is Callaghan Innovation deputy chair and a New Zealand Police Assurance and Risk Committee member. At WorkSafe, she replaces Ross Wilson.
