Covid-19 update: 5757 new cases, 20 deaths

There were 5757 new cases of Covid-19 reported last week and 258 people were in hospital.

There were 20 new deaths attributable to Covid-19 reported this week.

Of the new cases reported, 3609 were reinfections, Te Whatu Ora says.

Recent Covid-19 wastewater figures have suggested the latest Omicron wave is tailing off.

Surveillance figures from the Institute of Environmental Science and Research showed a sharp decline in the week ending 21 January.

The viral load had dropped by more than half to 3.76 million genome copies per person per day, after apparently peaking in the first week of January at 8.46 million genome copies per person.

Last week, 7019 new cases of Covid-19 were reported and 343 people were in hospital with the virus.
